A campus fixture since 1904, the Mary Chisholm Painter Memorial Gateway serves as a visual reminder of the transformation that comes with the student journey at Case Western Reserve University.
The arch was a gift to Western Reserve University from Cleveland businessman William Chisholm and his wife, Mary Stahl Chisholm, in memory of their late daughter鈥攁 founder of the Rainbow Cottage, a predecessor of University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children鈥檚 Hospital.
Located off Euclid Avenue near the Church of the Covenant, the arch served as one of the most iconic landmarks of Western Reserve鈥檚 College for Women. It was designed by Charles Schweinfurth, architect of many campus landmarks and at least 15 residences on Cleveland鈥檚 famed Millionaire鈥檚 Row.
