About the Program

If you鈥檙e interested in building a career in the life sciences, look no further than a Master of Science in Biochemistry from Case Western Reserve University. As a top research university in the U.S., our institution has a rich history of training scientists and physicians. Here, you鈥檒l be immersed in a welcoming, intellectual environment where our faculty, staff and students explore the foundations of the biochemical mechanisms that drive life, death and disease at the molecular, cellular and organismal level. Plus, our program only has two required courses, so you can build a curriculum that fits your post-graduation plans. From cancer biology to RNA biosynthesis, you鈥檒l explore paradigm-shifting biochemistry questions鈥攑reparing you for further study or a career in academia, government, health care or industry.

What to Expect

Our 36-credit-hour curriculum is flexible鈥攚ith full- and part-time study available鈥攁nd allows you to choose electives based on your interests. You鈥檒l work toward your degree with courses in biochemistry and other subjects, seminars, original research and a comprehensive exam.

What鈥檚 more, we have a new track in Experimental Biotechnology which prepares you for employment opportunities as a researcher in academia or the biotechnology industry. This sequence of lecture and laboratory courses covers lab skills and techniques in biochemistry and molecular biology that are important in the growing biotech field.

In the lab, all of the undergraduate students, graduate students and postdocs inspired me not only with their intelligence, but also with their integrity, persistence, hard work, dedication and strong passion for scientific discovery. Beyond the Classroom

You鈥檒l have opportunities to participate in original research, teaming up with faculty mentors who are dedicated to your development and success. With more than 200 faculty mentors available at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and our affiliated hospitals, you鈥檒l be certain to find a research mentor in an area that interests you. This chance to work closely with our faculty is excellent preparation if you鈥檙e looking to pursue a doctorate; strong students may even be permitted to transfer to our PhD program.

Admission Requirements

Entering students should have an undergraduate degree in biochemistry, biology, chemistry or a related science, with a solid background in mathematics, chemistry, physics and biology.

When reviewing your profile for admission consideration, we require the following:

  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Official transcripts
  • GRE scores (optional)
  • TOEFL or IELTS scores (if applicable)
