About the Program

Solve interdisciplinary problems that extend beyond science and technology with a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics from Case Western Reserve, one of the top research universities in the U.S. The field of applied, or interdisciplinary, mathematics focuses on the development and implementation of mathematics and mathematical methods in other subjects鈥攆rom physics, engineering and computer technology, to biology, medicine, economics and business. 

In our program, where we鈥檙e known for leading at the forefront of the field, you鈥檒l take specialized courses tailored to your interests. And you鈥檒l graduate prepared to work in a variety of fields and subject areas, including risk management, climate change, medicine, national security, computer engineering, astronomy and space exploration, database administration, financial services, robotics and more.
 

What to Expect

You can complete our program in two years if studying full time. Here, you鈥檒l complete a minimum of 30 credit hours, taking classes on topics such as advanced engineering mathematics, probability, numerical differential equations, and cryptology, to name a few. 


During your program, you鈥檒l have the option to complete a comprehensive oral examination in three areas, or substitute that requirement with an expository or original thesis. If you choose the latter route, you鈥檒l defend your thesis through an oral examination, during which you鈥檒l be questioned about the thesis and related topics. 
Join the (MGSA), an organization of all master鈥檚- and doctoral-level students at CWRU who are studying statistics, applied mathematics and pure mathematics. MGSA hosts annual activities to bring you together with your peers.

The application process requires:

  • Bachelor鈥檚 from an accredited institution (either already complete, or will be complete before you enroll)

  • Test scores for GRE (required) and MAT, MCAT, LSAT, DACT or GMAT (optional)
  • International applicants: Results of TOEFL, IELTS or PTE
