Master of Arts – One-Year Intensive

About the Program

In Case Western Reserve University’s one-year intensive Master of Arts in Medical Anthropology and Global Health program, our award-winning faculty are leaders in their field—and will guide you to become an expert, too. Here, you’ll immerse yourself in a variety of courses in just one academic year, delving into topics ranging from illegal drugs and society to health and healing in East Asia. You’ll also have the option to earn an interdisciplinary certificate in global health upon graduation in partnership with the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Our students have traveled the world conducting research, volunteering and advancing their education—where will your studies take you?

What to Expect

As a student in our MA in Medical Anthropology and Global Health program, you and a small cohort of classmates will dive into topics such as contemporary anthropology theory, ethnographic and qualitative research, and HIV/AIDS. You'll learn from faculty who are experts in their fields. In fact, two of our faculty members were elected to the National Academy of Sciences—an honor bestowed on an elite selection of internationally renowned experts and scholars.

Our program is an ideal fit for those who want to make a difference, offering coursework known to lead to impactful careers.

The one-year MA program in medical anthropology was a perfect fit for me. It was both challenging and gratifying and provided opportunities for me to develop my personal interests in the field along the way.

Beyond the Classroom

The Department of Anthropology also has a chapter of Lambda Alpha, the international honors society for students of anthropology. Once you are admitted, you can apply for funding for conferences, seminars and any other approved activities while you pursue your degree.

After you graduate, you’ll be prepared to pursue a rewarding career in the allied health sciences or continue your training in field such as medicine, public health and nursing. These paths can take you anywhere in the world, or you can pursue a career right in Case Western Reserve's backyard at a top hospital system or local nonprofit in Cleveland.
